Oman<\/b> (\/o\u028a<\/span>\u02c8<\/span>m<\/span>\u0251\u02d0<\/span>n<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span> (\"About<\/a>listen<\/a><\/span><\/span>)<\/span> oh-MAHN<\/i><\/a>; Arabic<\/a>: \u0639\u0645\u0627\u0646<\/span>\u200e \u02bbum\u0101n<\/i><\/i> <\/small>[\u0295\u028a\u02c8ma\u02d0n]<\/a><\/span>), officially the Sultanate of Oman<\/b> (Arabic<\/a>: \u0633\u0644\u0637\u0646\u0629 \u0639\u064f\u0645\u0627\u0646<\/span>\u200e Sal\u1e6danat \u02bbUm\u0101n<\/i><\/i>), is an Arab<\/a> country on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula<\/a> in Western Asia<\/a>. Its official religion is Islam<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Holding a strategically important position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf<\/a>, the country shares land borders with the United Arab Emirates<\/a> to the northwest, Saudi Arabia<\/a> to the west, and Yemen<\/a> to the southwest, and shares marine borders<\/a> with Iran<\/a> and Pakistan<\/a>. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea<\/a> on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman<\/a> on the northeast. The Madha<\/a> and Musandam<\/a> exclaves are surrounded by the UAE on their land borders, with the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> (which it shares with Iran) and Gulf of Oman forming Musandam’s coastal boundaries.<\/p>\n

From the late 17th century, the Omani Sultanate was a powerful empire<\/a>, vying with Portugal<\/a> and the UK for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean<\/a>. At its peak in the 19th century, Omani influence or control extended across the Strait of Hormuz to modern-day Iran and Pakistan<\/a>, and as far south as Zanzibar<\/a>.[7]<\/a><\/sup> When its power declined in the 20th century, the sultanate came under the influence of the United Kingdom<\/a>. For over 300 years, the relations built between the two empires were based on mutual benefits. The UK recognized Oman’s geographical importance as a trading hub that secured their trade lanes in the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean and protected their empire in the Indian sub-continent. By contrast, the British strengthened Oman’s internal unity and allied the sultanate against external threats.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[unreliable source?<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup> Historically, Muscat<\/a> was the principal trading port of the Persian Gulf region. Muscat was also among the most important trading ports of the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n

The Sultan<\/a> Qaboos bin Said al Said<\/a> has been the hereditary leader of the country, an absolute monarchy<\/a>,[9]<\/a><\/sup> since 1970.[9]<\/a><\/sup> Sultan Qaboos is the longest-serving current ruler<\/a> in the Middle East,[10]<\/a><\/sup> and third-longest current reigning monarch<\/a> in the world.<\/p>\n

Oman is a member of the United Nations<\/a>, the Arab League<\/a>, the Gulf Cooperation Council<\/a>, the Non-Aligned Movement<\/a> and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation<\/a>. It has sizable oil reserves, ranking 25th globally<\/a>.[11]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup> In 2010, the United Nations Development Programme<\/a> ranked Oman as the most improved nation in the world in terms of development during the preceding 40 years.[13]<\/a><\/sup> A significant portion of its economy involves tourism<\/a> and trade of fish, dates, and certain agricultural produce.
