Its official religion is <a title=\"Islam in Oman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Oman\">Islam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Holding a strategically important position at the mouth of the <a title=\"Persian Gulf\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_Gulf\">Persian Gulf<\/a>, the country shares land borders with the <a title=\"United Arab Emirates\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Arab_Emirates\">United Arab Emirates<\/a> to the northwest, <a title=\"Saudi Arabia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saudi_Arabia\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> to the west, and <a title=\"Yemen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yemen\">Yemen<\/a> to the southwest, and shares <a title=\"Maritime boundary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maritime_boundary\">marine borders<\/a> with <a title=\"Iran\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iran\">Iran<\/a> and <a title=\"Pakistan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pakistan\">Pakistan<\/a>. The coast is formed by the <a title=\"Arabian Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arabian_Sea\">Arabian Sea<\/a> on the southeast and the <a title=\"Gulf of Oman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulf_of_Oman\">Gulf of Oman<\/a> on the northeast. The <a title=\"Madha\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madha\">Madha<\/a> and <a title=\"Musandam Governorate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musandam_Governorate\">Musandam<\/a> exclaves are surrounded by the UAE on their land borders, with the <a title=\"Strait of Hormuz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strait_of_Hormuz\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> (which it shares with Iran) and Gulf of Oman forming Musandam&#8217;s coastal boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>From the late 17th century, the Omani Sultanate was a <a title=\"Colonial empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonial_empire\">powerful empire<\/a>, vying with <a title=\"Portugal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portugal\">Portugal<\/a> and the UK for influence in the Persian Gulf and <a title=\"Indian Ocean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Ocean\">Indian Ocean<\/a>. At its peak in the 19th century, Omani influence or control extended across the Strait of Hormuz to modern-day Iran and <a title=\"Pakistan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pakistan\">Pakistan<\/a>, and as far south as <a title=\"Zanzibar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zanzibar\">Zanzibar<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-etn.sagepub.com_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oman#cite_note-etn.sagepub.com-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> When its power declined in the 20th century, the sultanate came under the influence of the <a title=\"United Kingdom\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\">United Kingdom<\/a>. For over 300 years, the relations built between the two empires were based on mutual benefits. The UK recognized Oman&#8217;s geographical importance as a trading hub that secured their trade lanes in the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean and protected their empire in the Indian sub-continent.
